A new take on hybrid driving

The new hybrid Civic has two electric motors and an Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This sounds pretty standard until you look at how the electric motors are situated. One is attached directly to the engine to act as a generator, while the other works as a traction motor. There’s a clutch between the two motors that allows the motors to handle most of the power. At highway speeds, the engine sends torque to the front axle, but otherwise, the engine acts as a generator, and the electric motors handle most of the power output.

How much power do you get?

The new Honda Civic Hybrid gives you healthy performance numbers, especially for a compact sedan that’s not supposed to be a performance car. This little sedan delivers 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque to your driving experience. The horsepower matches the sporty Civic Si figures and the torque is much better than that of the Si version. Of course, the new hybrid version has more weight, with 288 pounds of extra mass compared to the Si model, which could make it slower.

The new Civic Hybrid hits this mark in 6.2 seconds, while the Civic Si achieves it in 6.6 seconds, which is pretty impressive. The top speed is limited to 114 mph, but it would be nice to know what this car can do with that governor removed.

The four-cylinder engine acts as a generator most of the time, which makes the traditional feeling better than expected.

The hybrid feeling is a little of both worlds
