The world has anticipated and waited for the arrival of the Ioniq 9 for several years. This new three-row electric SUV is modern in every sense of the word, making it easy to experience family driving while using nothing but electricity for your time on the road. What should you expect from this Hyundai?

This new three-row electric SUV is bold and futuristic in its exterior styling, but has ample room and seating in the cabin with a lounge-like atmosphere that’s configured perfectly for six or seven passengers. For this first model year, there are three powertrains offered, giving you the choice between RWD and AWD motoring depending on the number of motors you choose. The Ioniq 9 is built on the E-GMP platform shared with Kia, giving it a proven platform for electric driving excellence that makes it easy for owners to enjoy their new family SUV.

How much power does the Ioniq 9 offer?

The power and performance of any electric SUV depends on the powertrain setup. The new Hyundai Ioniq 9 has three powertrain giving you various setups, driving ranges, and power options. The RWD S single-motor version produces 215 horsepower at the rear axle, giving you the starting point for this three-row electric SUV. If you want to have the most affordable version, this is the one you’ll buy.

Moving up from there, the Ioniq 9 can be had with AWD in dual-motor models that are the SE and SEL trims. These versions give you 303 horsepower while the Performance AWD version takes things to the next level with 422 horsepower.

Range and charging time

Every model of this electric SUV uses a 110.3-kWh battery, which is enough to keep things going for a while. While riding on 19-inch wheels, the RWD version has 335 miles of driving range. The SE and SEL trims return 320 miles of range and the Performance version has 311 miles of range. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent of its full charge in only 24 minutes on a 350-kW DC fast charger, which is pretty impressive.

Is it quick?

Electric vehicles are known to be quick off the line because the full torque level is available as soon as you hit the accelerator. Despite being a large and somewhat cumbersome SUV, the Ioniq 9 can hit 60 MPH in 4.4 seconds when set up in the Performance AWD trim. The top speed is claimed to be 124 MPH, but this SUV isn’t made for speed, but for electric driving excellence.

Can it tow?

The base version tows up to 3,500 pounds, which is pretty good considering it only has one electric motor and 215 horsepower. The AWD models can tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is much more practical and useful. These are good figures if you plan to tow a trailer with camping gear or some small water toys.

Excellence in the cabin

The new Hyundai Ioniq 9 brings the brand’s unique interior to the mix, setting it apart from the pack of midsize three-row SUVs. The front seats are extremely comfortable and called Relaxation seats, which are set up with a dynamic massage function. The Ioniq 9 has swiveling second and third-row seats in foreign models, but that feature might not be part of the versions sold in America. There’s a center console that slides back so that second-row passengers can access it. This creates a pass-through in the front seats, which could be useful for larger items to reside on the floor, like a cooler full of drinks for a road trip.

The Ioniq 9’s cabin is covered in sustainable materials, including recycled plastic, wool, synthetic faux leather, and suede. Behind the third row, you’ll find 22 cubic feet of storage space, giving you room for some luggage. If you fold the rearmost row, you’ll have access to 46 cubic feet of storage space. There’s also a small frunk under the hood, giving you a good space for a few emergency items.

The modern design continues with a tech package that’s optimized for EV drivers. This includes advanced EV route planning in the Hyundai Ioniq 9, which makes it easy to find charging stations along your route. Every mode has seven USB-C charging ports located throughout the cabin, and a standard 8-speaker audio system handles the entertainment for you. In the center of the dashboard, you’ll see a 12.0-inch infotainment screen with a similar size instrument panel to the left, giving you the readings you need.

Advanced safety package

The usual list of warning systems and safety alerts is part of the Ioniq 9 package, giving you the systems you need to stay safe and secure on the road. These systems include blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
