Cadillac Takes a Tech Spot Away from Tesla

Consumer Reports is a publication we’ve all admired and for the first time, they have tested the semi-autonomous driving systems of Cadillac and Tesla.

This is how the Cadillac Super Cruise system was put up against the Tesla Autopilot system to see which one would offer the most complete package of features for the drive. Of course, these aren’t the only two semi-autonomous driving systems on the market, but right now, they seem to be the most complete and were the ones used to see how they could perform during the test.

Testing Systems for a Technological Advantage

There were four different semi-autonomous systems that were tested by Consumer Reports. The idea was to monitor how well the technology works, how easy it is to use, and how well it monitors the driver engagement and then responds to a non-responsive driver. In addition to the Cadillac Super Cruise and the Tesla Autopilot systems, the other systems that were tested included the Nissan ProPilot Assist and the Volvo Pilot Assist. With these four systems ready to be tested, the team put them through their paces in order to determine which one should be trusted the most.

The Purpose of these Systems from Cadillac and Tesla

When a semi-autonomous system is working properly, it should balance out the capabilities of the technological advancements offered with the safeguards that are in place to keep everyone in the car and on the road safer. This is necessary to make driving easier, less stressful, and make sure you can handle the situations you face on the road much better than in the past. Unfortunately, we’ve seen examples of drivers who became overly reliant on the systems in the past and have ended up in crashes that have been fatal.

How does the Cadillac Super Cruise Work for You?

The Super Cruise system uses a camera to watch the driver’s eyes when you’re on the road. If you stop paying attention, the car will give you a series of warnings and then begin to slow the vehicle down. This was the best system at letting you know where it can and can’t be used on the roads and also monitor the engagement of the driver behind the wheel. When compared to the other systems, the Super Cruise was the only one that offered ample warnings of merges, ramps, and difficult traffic.

Ranking These Four Systems

The Cadillac Super Cruise was the one to earn the top spot overall. The Tesla Autopilot system came in second but was found to cause erratic function on roads where it wasn’t able to operate normally. The Nissan ProPilot Assist made its way to third while the Volvo Pilot Assist came in last out of these four. If you’re going to drive a vehicle that has a semi-autonomous driving system, you’re going to want to choose one of the Cadillac models that offer you Super Cruise so that you can stay engaged with the vehicle and know it’s watching you as well.
