What happened to the Buick LaCrosse? Why did Buick suddenly delete one of the most comfortable full-size sedans in the market? The LaCrosse sedan came to us in 2004 as a midsize premium sedan that replaced the Century and Regal for the 2005 model year. Originally a midsize sedan, when refreshed in 2010, the LaCrosse moved up to the full-size class, where it gained popularity and prestige. Why was this car deleted from the North American market? Could we see a return of this big Buick in the future?
GM Made a Paradigm Shift
The writing was on the wall; with car sales skyrocketing through 2018, many automakers prepared for the fall that would come. Most things in life are cyclical, and the Detroit Big Three did not want to face the same challenges they faced in 2008. Instead of waiting for the U.S. Government to step in and tell them what to do, Ford, GM, and Chrysler (now Stellantis) all cut fat from their brands. For GM, this meant ridding the market of the sedans that didn’t sell well. SUVs had taken over the top spot in sales, and the class wasn’t slowing down, leaving sedans far behind.
GM marketed this sudden change with two goals in mind. The first goal was to put efforts, investments, and focus on the SUVs and trucks that were selling well and making profits for the companies. Second, a commitment to future hybrid and EV models left many gas-powered sedans in the dust. Unfortunately, that meant the Buick LaCrosse would no longer be part of the market. The LaCrosse was only one of many cars to get cut, but it was the roomiest and the most comfortable of those we no longer enjoy driving.
Is a Return of the LaCrosse Sedan Planned
You might not know this, but the GM plant in China still makes the Buick LaCrosse. This car is now only offered in the Asian market and it’s mostly sold to companies that want to use it as company transportation. China fell in love with Buick not long ago. As a reward, the first Buick SUV made in China and imported to the United States became part of our market. That SUV is the Buick Envision, which slips into the middle of the SUV lineup. While a return of the LaCrosse would make a few shoppers happy, nothing in the current market tells us another full-size sedan would fit.
